Boost for Africa green revolution

Monday, June 16th, 2008

Two big development groups say they will invest in new roads and develop new technologies to boost Africa’s agriculture.

Most well orientated bloggers that enjoy the many pleasures of the blogosphere have undoubtedly noticed that some of the most esteemed blogs on the internet have seen their Page Rank (PR) degrease, or in some cases, completely removed. Google has justified its latest actions by blaming bloggers for contributing to the propagation of spam and for attempting to exploit the PR system. The intention of this article is not to promote or discourage link building. It is intended to guide individuals interested in such practices by outlining a few important points and present a few tips worth taking into consideration.

Selling links

According to Google selling links is a big no, no. For the safety of any blog advertising such services is profoundly discouraged. It is always important to take into profound consideration any sudden suspicious offer received from unknown individuals. In the same way, advertising link sales on popular webmaster forums is a bad idea since they might be under the Google radar. Even link exchange with similar sites is vividly discouraged if the trading partner isn’t clearly identified.

Paid posting

The latest Google attack was felt hardest on blogs that conducted and promoted paid posting. According to Google the commercialization of blog post is a technique designed to swindle the Page Rank system and increase spam content on the internet. To avoid sudden PR death there are a few issues worth mentioning. Never advertise any paid, review or exchange post service on a blog. All those eye catching banners and flickering links advertising these services should be removed without more ado.

Only noFollow links

Google has determined that blogs using the doFollow attribute are predominantly used for spamming purposes since the code used is intended to instruct search engines that a hyperlink should influence the site in terms of search engine indexing. Displaying banners advertising the use of the doFollow attribute sends a clear message to Google so it is not recommended. In most cases using the noFollow attribute is seriously recommended.

Link farms are dead

Link farms or directory sites, as they are commonly called, are a danger and should always be avoided. These sites are the black sheep of the internet and in most cases have seen their PR drop considerably. If a blog or site has a few incoming links from directories that shouldn’t be a problem but if they represent nearly all inbound links, it could be considered worrying.

To Banner or not to Banner

Selling banners on blogs has become quite common practice, seeing its popularity increase especially over the past few months. This practice could be considered acceptable and safe, but just to be sure the blog should have the noFollow attribute enabled. For extra protection the links should only be directed to similar or related content sites.

Dangerous Affiliates

There are a few affiliate programs that represent a risk and should be used with some caution. Each person will have to judge whether they should or should not use them, given that running them discretely in most cases won’t be a problem. Such affiliate programs include text link selling programs, paid posting and site review services.

In the end of the day each person will have to decide if the gains are worth the risks. The best advice possible to be given is, maintain the services discrete and never be tempted to advertise them openly.

Lifetime honour for actor Beatty

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

A host of stars pay tribute to Warren Beatty, who has received a lifetime achievement award from the American Film Institute.

When the weather is cold and wet outside, and kids are cooped up inside, winter crafts are a great way to keep them entertained. With just a few simple crafting supplies you can keep them busy for hours and avoid cabin fever at the same time. Give it a try and come up with some winter craft ideas for your kids using some of the suggestions below.

Paper Snowflakes

Do you remember cutting fancy snowflakes out of a piece of paper when you where a kid? Your child will enjoy this simple craft just as much. Get out a few pieces of white paper, fold them and start cutting out snowflakes. When you have a nice collection of different designs, hang them on a window, or get out a big sheet of dark blue or black construction paper and glue them on for a fun snowflake collage.

Make A Snow Landscape.

Get a shoebox or any other size box, turn it on its side and put some cotton batting in the bottom as a layer of snow. Then let your kids craft little houses out of milk carton boxes adding some more cotton batting to the roofs for a layer of snow. Use small branches and twigs as trees, and cotton balls as snow covered bushes. Cut some an irregular circular shape out of light blue paper to represent a lake. Different size Styrofoam balls (or marshmallows), held together by a toothpick make for a great snowman.

Inside Snow Angels

Let the kids make snow angles inside, when thereâ??s not enough snow to do it outside. You and the kids can tear newspaper into small strips or pieces. Or just run the newspaper through the paper shredder. Pile it up on the kitchen floor. If you have a lot of packing peanuts, those will work as well. Let your kids lay down and make snow angels by moving their arms and legs. Donâ??t forget to take a picture of the process and the finished snow angle. When youâ??re done, sweep it all up and put it into your recycle bin.

For more fun winter craft ideas including a snowman craft and ideas for snow painting visit http://www.kinderinfo.com While youâ??re there, donâ??t forget to sign up for our free newsletter as well.

Two Picassos stolen in Brazil

Saturday, June 14th, 2008

Armed robbers in the Brazilian city of Sao Paulo steal two Picasso engravings and works by Brazilian artists.

At the age of 75, Trudy Schwader can only estimate her lifetime total of quilts. Somewhere around number 50 she began counting and taking pictures before giving them away. By now, her best guess - counting the baby quilts and the wedding quilts and the ones that were an experiment with color or style or pattern - her best guess is that she’s made more than 130 quilts.

With that many to her credit, Trudy’s quilting experience holds something useful to share with everyone from beginning quilters to lifetime veterans. So I decided to talk with Trudy and make a record of her quilting career. The result is a series of articles representing our conversations. The interviews piece together a little of the rich history that quilting holds, through one woman’s story and memories - sharing some tips, insights, and favorite patternsâ?¦

[Question: How did you get started quilting?]
Trudy: My mother always sewed, and ever since I was about 10 years old, I liked to sew, too. I’m sure I was sewing younger but I definitely remember sewing by the time I was 10. I was one of the youngest of 13 children, and when the older kids were grown and gone, Mother made quilts. I always liked her quilts.

[Question: So you liked quilts and you liked sewing: it was a perfect match.]
Trudy: Yes. Also, I like to put puzzles together and putting quilts together is a puzzle. (laughs)

[Question: You never really were a beginner, then. You were always sewing. Still, when you were 10 years old, obviously you didn’t start putting together a big patchwork queen-sized quilt. When you started quilting on your own, what was your first big project?]
Trudy: Well, actually, 50 some years ago when I got married and I didn’t have kids yet, I started making a quilt. I put roses in because I like roses and I made this quilt top. And then I started hand-quilting it, but by that time I had three kids and I was too darn busy!

[Question: So your first quilt was one that you started as a newlywed and then had three kids before you got it quilted?]
Trudy: Before I got it hand-quilted. The rest of it I finally just tied, and because I had so many kids, (eight all together), I kept using the quilt. I noticed that what didn’t wear out as quick was what I had hand-quilted, so I said I’d never tie a quilt again.

In the meantime, I just never did like to do handwork. So I generally don’t hand-quilt now, I get my quilt-top ready and then let somebody else machine or hand-quilt it. What I like about quilting is working with the colors and creating patterns and putting the pieces of the design together - not doing hand-work.

[Question: Do you still have your first quilt with the roses on it?]
Trudy: No, no, no, no. (laughs) That was so long ago and I needed it for the kids, and with children you have to wash things all the time. I used that quilt up till it was… gone. By then, I had made another and then another one. Still doing that.

Cameron pledge to boost families

Tuesday, June 10th, 2008

David Cameron says helping families will be one of the defining social reforms of the next Tory government.

Along with the growth in the Real Estate market, Dubai has experienced simultaneous growth in its home finance sector in the past three years. According to a recent study by EFG-Hermes the current outstanding loans stands at Dh 11.5 billion. It is estimated by the Egyptian investment bank that the UAE housing finance sector will grow by Dh 14bn in 2007, Dh 18bn in the year 2008, the growth is estimated to be Dh18bn in 2009 as well and Dh 14bn and Dh 17bn in the years 2010 and 2011 respectively. These figures have been derived based on an expected population compound annual growth rate of about three percent.

The most dominant forces in the Emirates’ home finance market are Amlak and Tamweel. They account for over 35 and 25 percentage of the industry respectively.

The Real Estate boom of the emirate has left the world spell bound, EFG-Hermes predicts that the total growth in the Real Estate should exceed the figure of Dh419bn in the years between 2008 and 2011. It has also been said that Dh 64bn will be funded through credit. The national bank of Dubai has tied up with Dubai properties for the sole purpose of finance apartments which are bought in tower ‘H’. Tower ‘H’ is a primary tower for residential purposes at Business Bay in the project of the executive Towers. This tie up of the national bank of Dubai and Dubai properties, is more than welcome, as this tie up will ensure easy financing terms for the people who are aspiring to buy apartments in tower ‘H’. These easy schemes will mean that people will be able t finance their dream homes with no obligations of interest repayment. In this case the loan is made available for 85 percent of the property price of a sum of 4 million AED, whichever is lower. This loan is provided for a period of 20 years.

Dubai’s Islamic bank (DIB) and Al Islami home finance are also witnessing high demands from the retail customers.

They have recently launched solutions that aim to meet the requirements of retail customers. These customers include both the UAE nationals and expatriates who are keen on buying property in the UAE freehold property market.

In response to this high demand of the people, DIB has announced the launch of Mobile Mortgage Advisors. They are a team of mortgage sales expert who will be providing valuable consultancy at the customers door step.

Al Islami finance has launched finance solution products such as the “forward Ijarah” and “Ijarah”. Through the “Advanced Eligibility Process” customers get a right to choose their finance limit without first having to choose the property.

When one talks about financing, the most common variable is some type of collateral. When you finance a home or a car, if you do not pay, you loose the car or home. However when you decide to finance a plastic surgery procedure, there is no collateral, they cannot repossess your face if you do not pay, therefore any loan to have a procedure done would be considered an unsecured loan, or a signature loan as it is more commonly referred to.

From that point, it comes down to the normal ins and outs associated with any loan application which includes things like your income and expenses, do you own or rent and of course the big one, what is you credit rating.

Unfortunately if you have never used credit, then chances are you will not qualify for a plastic surgery loan. Since it is a signature loan, you will usually need to have a 700 or better credit rating although many other factors maybe in play that may help or hurt your chances.

Just like taking out any loan, you also need to sit down and figure out if you can afford to make the payments and if so, how much can you reasonably afford to pay every month. If you have any experience in taking out a loan in the past, you will know that the lender will try to push you to take a higher monthly payment to save you interest, but at what cost. At the cost of your ability to take any future loans.

There are many companies and financial institutions that are more than willing to offer specialized plastic surgery loans to those who may not have a high enough credit score to take a loan from a bank. These companies deal especially in higher risk unsecured credit like credit cards. Matter of fact, the credit card giant Capitol One offers plastic surgery loans among other things. Like any other loan or use of credit, make sure that you understand what you are getting into before you make the final decision to dive into the plastic surgery loan process.

Writer Morris ‘remarries’ partner

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Writer Jan Morris, who had a sex-change operation, has ‘remarried’ the same woman.

iPod and MP3 players are becoming omnipresent. Everywhere you go, you see the familiar headphones in someoneâ??s ears. And with the busy lifestyles we live, it is no wonder that audiobook sales are soaring. The combination of audiobooks and iPods are now making it possible for people to listen to their books on tape, or audiobooks where ever they go.

Apple and its many retail partners managed to sell 88 iPods per minute in 2006 which totaled 46,432,000 iPods sold. That is more then 1 iPod sold per second! The Christmas season from October and December were obviously the busiest of the year.

IPod sales look to continue to grow in 2007. In the first quarter of 2006, total iPods sold were 8.53 million. It is estimated that for the first quarter of 2007 iPod sales will be over 10 million. Some predict that the new iPhone will slow down iPod sales, but others feel the iPhone will not be competition due to its US $500 Price plus associated fees.

Audiobook sales have also been soaring. In 2005, audiobook sales totaled $871 million. Audio books are getting a boost in sales due to the rise in popularity of downloadable audiobooks which represented 9 percent of total audio book sales in 2005. While that number may seem small, it is a 50 percent increase in sales from 2004. It is fair to predict that audiobook downloads are going to continue to rise due to the rise in popularity of iPods and MP3 players.

Another reason audiobook download sales are going to continue to soar is that as of this year, almost all new cars are now capable of playing digital audio files. 97 million Americans drive alone to work everyday, and commuters are stuck in traffic an average of 62 hours per year. That is 32 percent of the entire U.S. population, and that does not even include those who commute by bike, bus, train or car pool. Now that audiobooks can be played so easily in cars and on iPods, itâ??s easy to see that audiobook download sales are going to skyrocket even further.

It is clear that with the rise in iPods and MP3 players, and the rise in audiobook downloads go hand in hand. Listening to your audiobooks on iPods is a great way to maximize your time. It seems to be harder then ever to find the time to read. We can now find time to read, or rather listen thanks to our trusted iPods and MP3 players.

We can multi-task by listening to our audiobooks as we exercise, clean the house, commute to work, or even just listen to as we relax. In fact, there are several audiobook titles that are designed to help you fall asleep and to relax.

Many businessmen love listening to their sales or motivation audiobooks. Students are listening to assigned literature on their iPods as audiobooks. People are learning a foreign language with audiobooks. And couples are saving their relationships by listening to audiobooks.

Audiobook downloads are priced far better then audiobooks in prepackaged CDâ??s, which another great feature. There are also many free titles to listen to and many quality websites let you listen to five minutes of your audiobook before making a purchase.

It is easy to download your audiobook off of the Internet. You simply select your title, make the secure purchase, then you are ready to download. The download takes seconds to a few minutes depending on the size of the file on most computers. If you have a dialup, you can select the smallest size file for each title which is not as good of quality, but still sounds as good as any audiobook CD you may have purchased from the store. Once you download your audiobook, you can play it on your PC, burn it to disc, or you can load it to your iPod or MP3 player.

After learning how easy it is do listen to an audio book on your iPod or MP3 player, what are you waiting for, go out there and listen to you audio book today!

If you are ready to start downloading your audiobooks today, the author recommends visiting http://www.audiobookstoreportal.com If you own a website and would like to sell audiobooks through your site, visit http://www.audiobookstoreportal.com/affiliatesignup.html

Klimt show ’set to break records’

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Tate Liverpool is poised for a recordnumber of visitors for its exhibition on artist Gustav Klimt, staff say.

The future of SEO is a very interesting topic that many people want to know about today. Search engine optimization can really make or break your business. Many people have lost a lot of money using Google adwords, and therefore have turned their attention to SEO to start generating traffic.

SEO is a great way to get traffic, because it’s all free and you do not have to pay a cent, like you do with pay per click. While it certainly takes more time to start generating traffic, in the long run you can actually get more than you could with pay per click, and it will definitely work in your favor.

So what is the future of SEO? What kind of things do the search engines look for when ranking your site, and what will they be looking for in the future? Since Google and the other search engines are always changing their algorithims and what they want from sites, you need to stay updated in order to know what to do with your site in order to rank. Here is some important information to help you with this.

First of all, SEO is certainly leaning heavily toward good content, and is becoming more and more so every single day. Every time Google does a new dance, they simply are trying to improve the content that they offer. The only way the search engines will get people to use them is if they offer good, quality content that gives visitors the answers to whatever looking for.

This is why that Google and other search engines have recently abandoned the mass produced sites many people were putting up. Quite simply, many people simply slapped up sites that ripped content from other sites, and didn’t write anything useful to their visitors.

Therefore, the first thing to keep in mind is that your site needs to have good content in order to get ranked in the search engines. Without this, it makes ranking in the search engines an extremely difficult task.

Once that’s been accomplished, the next thing to look for is off page factors, such as inbound links. Quite simply, the number of inbound links you have pointing to your site, the better.

What reciprocal linking certainly has been effective in the past to getting your site rank at the top of the search engines, just about every SEO expert agrees it is on the way out. The more way one way links you receive your site, the better, because it means that another site thought enough of your site to point exclusively to your site without even requiring a reciprocal link in return.

Of course, don’t forget about on page factors such as the title today, keyword density, etc. While not as important as off page factors, your on page factors will still certainly make a difference in your SEO rankings and website marketing. Follow these tips, and no matter what the future of SEO holds, your site will get ranked in the search engines. Even when the next Google Dance arrives, you will find that your site will still be at the top, if you follow this advice.

To Learn about and much more.

Prosecution rests in R Kelly case

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

The prosecution rests its case in R Kelly’s child pornography trial after graphic testimony from its star witness.

Pay per click, as the term itself suggests, is a form of advertising that makes use of keywords for popularizing your business on the web. To make a success of your pay per click marketing you need to find the keywords that will best describe about your business. Pay per click marketing is used these days on a large scale, as this is the best way to reach out to online visitors. A study found out that more than seventy five percent of online visitors could be reached through pay per click marketing.

Yes, pay per click marketing is the best source to attract the attention of online visitors, but you must also realize that you need to know all you can before you actually start the process for your business. Nothing can be more frustrating then being caught in a situation where you are not aware of what you are doing and what is happening to your business. So make sure that you know in detail all the nitty gritty about pay per click marketing before using pay per click marketing for your business.

Finding out and identifying the proper keywords is the first task for undertaking pay per click marketing. What you need to do is find out what words will be used by online visitors for searching information or the products that are being sold through your business. There are various tools that can be used for finding out the correct and appropriate keywords for any particular business. Overture, word tracker and digital point are some of the tools that are capable of finding out appropriate keyword for any site in the web.

Sit and plan out carefully what amount of money you are willing to spend on your pay per click marketing campaign. For pay per click marketing, you will have to bid a certain sum of money on keywords that describe your business. Those particular keywords will be used for advertising your goods in major search engines. Whenever a visitor clicks on your site a pre determined amount will be reduced from your bid amount. It is inevitable that you will get many visitors who will click on your site just because your site happens to be listed at the top of sponsored finds in search engines. This cannot be avoided.

There is very little time to grab the attention of visitors. What you can do to grab visitor attention is to making very compelling landing pages. It is very possible that people will not buy goods from you for the first time they visit, but design the page in such a way that at least the visitor leaves behind his email address so that you can contact them in future and tell them about your products. Your landing page must appeal emotionally to the visitor. If you manage to gather the email address you can create a strong database and send out emails through auto responder.

Competition is something that is inevitable and you cannot avoid this in any field. So any marketing strategy including your pay per click marketing strategy must be made and implemented in such a way that you always stay miles ahead of them. Being successful in business is all about beating the competition and no matter how tough the competition, you will have to beat this at all cost.

Dirty hospital practices revealed

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Hygiene routines face a shake-up at one of Wales’ leading hospitals after an undercover BBC investigation.

Before we talk shop about the best way to tag dialogue, permit me to illustrate the wrong way. Let’s bring some nursery rhyme characters to life for this, since they aren’t around to get offended:

The lamb, always sure to be where Mary was, watched Mary shellac her hair in place.

“Mary, you’re a scream,” the lamb chortled. “The aerosol helmet look went out in the 80s.”

“Oh, Petal,” Mary gushed, “you say the funniest things. I figured you were a dumb sheep until you started talking one day. Who knew?”

“That’s just it, you don’t know much about me,” Petal announced dejectedly. “Do you realize that I have not been a lamb for eons, Mary? A lamb is a sheep under a year old. Not a whole ‘nother species.”

Mary coughed and tried to wave away the misty cloud of spray that hovered near her face. “Uh-huh. Interesting, Petal,” she wheezed.

“This is a good time to bring something up,” Petal broached warily, brushing a piece of lint off his haunch. “I think it’s time we…you know…went our own ways.”

What?” she exclaimed with disbelief.

“You heard me,” Petal continued seriously. “You know that kid in your Trig class, the one with the ripped knees in his jeans and the skull patches on his denim jacket? I plan to follow him home today.”

Dylan?” Mary shrieked, cackling. “He’s a hunter, Pet. He shoots things for fun.”

“Maybe so,” the lamb acquiesced solemnly. “But at least he’d name me something with a little more oomph than ‘Petal,’ for crying out loud.”

“What’s wrong with Petal?” Mary echoed shrilly. “It’s better than ‘Snowflake,’” she growled. “How many options do you think the ‘fleece was white as snow’ gives me?”

“Not cool for a dude, Mare. Not virile,” the lamb proclaimed with dignity, puffing up his chest. He saw her broken face, softened, and went on. “Look, we had some fun, kiddo,” he said gently, “memories of the heart.” He pressed his hoof to his chest and closed his eyes.

“But I’ll miss you so much,” Mary sobbed sorrowfully. “Your kooky ears with the pink insides, your funny little bleating when you get hungry, your smell like dryer sheets and straw and — “

Okay, okay. You get the idea.

So, what’s wrong with it? Other than there isn’t much of market for talking farm animals (unless you’re writing for kids, and even then it’s a tough sell); other than it upsets our notions about the docile, one-woman lamb and the autonomous Mary; other than the fact that it’s impossible to speak and cackle or speak and sob at exactly the same time. Yes, the dialogue tags — they’re so thick and dramatic and distracting that they compete with the dialogue itself, nearly eclipsing the things the characters say.

Remember — dialogue tags have one function and one function only: to help the reader identify who’s speaking at any given time, and only when that clue is necessary.

The dialogue tags in the above example violate the rules of good writing on a few different levels:

Outlandish verbs.

It’s true that ultra-specific, electric verbs are usually far better than weak, wall-flower ones. But not in dialogue. Notice how your attention was pulled toward those dense, overly dramatic verbs instead of on the speech that preceded them. Also, the tags are heavy with adverbs. We all should limit our use of adverbs, since — in excess — they clutter and confuse prose.

Overkill.

There are too many dialogue tags in general. When the particulars of a character’s speech make it clear who is speaking, just cut the tag altogether. We know that Mary and Petal are the only players in the scene, so if a sentence begins “Mary,” we assume Petal has the floor. We don’t need to have the characters’ interactions slowed down by being reminded the lamb (sorry…sheep) is speaking. We already know that. (And this also falls under the sound advice to trust your readers.)

For heaven’s sake, can’t they just SAY something?

Another way the dialogue tags fail in the above example is by avoiding the powerful simplicity of SAID. Because readers are so used to seeing “said,” the word blends into the background; although the brain acknowledges it, it’s only a brief blip on the screen of awareness. The eye skims over it and moves on to the next detail. It’s as close to seamless as we can get in the world of character-speak. And that means using “said” or “says” instead of clunky adverbs leaves more room in our awareness to focus on the nuances of the dialogue itself.

This doesn’t mean that you can never have your characters shriek or announce or proclaim. (But please don’t have them growl. Humans really don’t growl.) It just means that they should simply “say” things more regularly than they declare them (or exclaim them or snap them). Create dialogue that itself sets a mood and reveals character intention; what’s inside the quotation marks should do that more often, not what’s adjacent.

The author’s hand is too heavy.

When we read, we want to lose ourselves in the story and forget about the author. With so much bric-a-brac cluttering the dialogue above, we’re constantly reminded that the author set it all up. The best dialogue puts the power in the characters’ mouths and lets the author slink backstage.

When we see the characters clearly and vividly, we tend to forget about the author, a delicious amnesia that perpetuates the illusion that what we’re reading is actually happening as we visualize it. So the most effective dialogue is interspersed with specific visual descriptions of the scene at hand, things that the characters are doing while they speak, things that help us see while we hear. Even the best dialogue will become monotonous and plodding if it marches on alone page after page. Be sure to break yours up with bits of relevant, interesting narrative.

Ask yourself:

Is your dialogue itself as specific and fresh as it can be?

If you want your characters to speak emphatically, are you lending them emphatic words, or are you trying to emphasize the dialogue tag instead?

Have you deliberately shaped your characters’ speech so that it reveals something about their motives and the story in general? Or is the dialogue the take-it-or-leave it variety, the sort that really doesn’t say anything at all if you lift it out of the story?

Are your characters speaking in a vivid way, or are they puppets hooked to strings of adjectives and adverbs?

Do all your characters sound alike, or have you given them subtle differences the reader can hear (but aren’t distracted or confused by)?

Now revisit Mary and Petal and delete any unnecessary dialogue tags (but leave in details that show what the two are doing in time and space). Tone down the tags that need to remain by erasing adverbs and substituting over-the-top verbs for the quiet helpfulness of “said.”

When it’s important to see what a character is doing, dramatize behaviors, mannerisms and gestures — not the words that were already spoken, since those should resonate on their own. Challenge yourself to write dialogue that speaks for itself (along with a little help from good old “said”).
